The Issue Teams considered best practices and researched current initiatives to develop aspirational yet achievable goals, policy options and projects to achieve the public vision of a thriving region by 2025. These goals are now available for public review and input. Provide your input today!
Strengths, Challenges and Possibilities
Power of 32 outcomes suggest the public wants greater collaboration across sectors and governmental jurisdictions to help us thrive by 2025. While they value their home and neighborhood communities, they recognize a strong region is vital to their future. They know that a strong region requires collaboration on those issues that cannot be addressed locally
STRENGTHS
Abundant natural resources are one of our greatest strengths, according to our participants. From eco-tourism, recreational activities, and natural beauty to energy resources, the region has enormous potential to develop a green energy economy and improve our environmental amenities. Participants believe the character and values of the region’s citizens, strong communities, and a low cost of living are essential parts of what will enable the region to thrive. They also want to leverage our institutions of higher learning to grow local economies and train our residents to compete in a global economy.
CHALLENGES
Participants also recognized that significant challenges exist, such as poor economic growth and not enough good paying jobs, limited transportation options, lack of opportunities for good public involvement, and a need for greater collaboration among local governments. An economy dependent on too few sectors is a concern. They want governments across the region to help businesses start here, relocate here, and grow here. Further, the lack of comprehensive regional transportation systems and access to broadband makes it difficult for residents to travel to and from work, home, and recreation. In some discussions, citizens said they are exposed to a wide range of people and cultures in the region; other participants believe that there is too much homogeneity in their communities.
POSSIBILITIES
Participants saw many possibilities for building on the region’s strengths and addressing its challenges. They introduced many specific possibilities: building the tourism economy, realizing jobs through Marcellus Shale production, expanding recreational opportunities, engaging citizens more in local and regional matters more often, and looking to government to lead the way in cross-jurisdictional collaboration. The message was clear: if the region is to thrive, the citizens, leaders, business, education, and government must work together for change.
